AI search: citations, access and useful evidence

Understand what is documented, what you can improve and what remains uncertain.

AI search visibility means being discoverable when an assistant uses outside information to answer a question. A mention, a linked citation and a visit to your website are different outcomes. Record which one you are trying to understand.

Begin with access and evidence

Read getting cited by AI for the distinctions between search access, model-training controls and useful source material. Allowing a crawler does not guarantee that an answer will use your page.

Then read how search decides what to show. Conventional search remains relevant: Google says its established SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements or special schema needed. See Google's guidance for AI features.

Make your business easier to understand

Start with the facts a potential customer needs: what you provide, where it is available, who is behind it, how it works and where the evidence can be checked. If you describe a result, show its reporting period and explain how it was measured.

Our Fleetalyse measurement example illustrates that evidence standard. Its search figures describe that project; they are not a guarantee of another site's growth or citations.

For a local business, read local SEO for Suffolk businesses. Clear coverage and contact information help people decide whether an answer applies to them.

Keep a small observation log

Choose a few genuine customer questions. For each observation, record the question, date, platform, answer and cited address. Note whether the answer describes your service accurately. Do not treat one favourable response as a stable ranking or a share-of-market measurement.

Compare those observations with relevant visits and enquiries you can actually measure. Google reports traffic from its AI features within the overall Web performance reporting described in its guidance; an ordinary Web total is not a separate count of AI citations.

Separate visibility from automation

Helping customers find you and building an AI tool for your team solve different problems. For the latter, read what a custom AI system actually is. Define the task, data and human checks before selecting a tool.

Continue with content and measurement, browse all topics, or use the start-here plan. Our sister agency SuffolkWeb provides implementation help; both publications and commercial services are operated by Fleeta Limited.

For a repeatable citation sample, follow the search investigation method. Record prompts, dates, context and cited URLs, and keep the sample separate from traffic or sales totals.
