SEO basics: a reading path for business owners

Understand the foundations before spending time on tactics.

SEO helps search engines understand your pages and helps people decide whether those pages answer their needs. The useful starting point is a website that can be reached, understood and used.

This path is for owners and publishers making decisions about their own site. You do not need to know how to write code.

Read in this order

  1. How search decides what to show. Separate discovery, indexing and ranking before diagnosing a problem.
  2. Sitemaps and what they are for. Understand what a sitemap can tell a search engine, and what it cannot guarantee.
  3. Keyword density is not a target. Describe the subject naturally instead of repeating a phrase to hit a percentage.
  4. Local SEO for Suffolk businesses. Connect your actual services and coverage with the information a nearby customer needs.
  5. SEO myths that refuse to die. Recognise advice that needs evidence before you spend money on it.

Try it on one service or product page

Write down the customer's main question. Then check whether the page answers it, gives relevant detail and makes the next step clear. If you sell a service, that might include who it is for, what is included, where it is available and how to enquire.

Look at the title and main heading. Would they make sense to someone who has never heard of your business? Follow the page's links: are they useful next steps, or does the reader reach a dead end?

Record the address and any problem in the start-here baseline. When access or indexing is unclear, inspect the page in Search Console before assuming that rewriting it will solve the issue.

Avoid the easy distractions

A domain's age, a third-party score or a particular word count does not explain an entire search result. Read does my domain age matter? before treating an old address as a substitute for useful work.

Google's SEO Starter Guide is the primary reference behind the fundamentals. Our exercises are a suggested way to apply them, not a promise of rankings.

Once you have a baseline, continue to content and measurement. If your question concerns AI answers, take the AI search path. All topics.
